In the past decade or two, there has been an upsurge of interest about the Maya, their history, civilization, and culture. There have been more documentaries and fiction movies, books and stories about them. This was partly fueled by the mythical Maya prediction of the end of the world in 2012, which for a short period of time put this civilization under the media spotlight. But there is much more to their culture than the common misconception about their calendar. And for a long time before the Maya caught the eyes of the wider population, archeologists and historians did their best to uncover and piece together the complete story about the Maya civilization.

  1. This video was mandatory viewing for my college assignments, and I am glad that it was.

I was aware of Mayan astrology, but I was unaware of their stark similarities to Ancient Greece's city-state organization. The fact that the Mayans didn't murder innocents in a systematic and deliberate fashion certainly makes them more civilzied than the Aztec Triple Alliance.

We know a ton more about the Mayans than we do the Aztecs, largely because Mayan civilization and religion did not produce the abominations of human sacrifices. Unlike Aztecs, Mayans used ritual bloodletting instead of actually killing their sacrifices in almost all situations. As the videographer said, actual human sacrifice was only done in panic and famine.

Mayan religion and culture was not systematically crushed like Aztec religion was. Christians putting pagan texts to the fire is an aberration; historically, many extinct religions are known only because Christians gathered them for the purpose of writing rebuttals..

While it's a shame that Aztec books and scriptures were burned, I get why they were.

  2. What I find interesting is that the whole american continent developed completly independent to the Eurasian continent for the past 12000 years. Even with this completly independent develeopments their build structures and culture followed the same outlines of those in eurasia. This would mean that some ideas are just inherintly human and will develop idependently if given the right amout of time.

  3. Two things. 1. The calendar you show is the Aztec, not Mayan calendar. And 2, the use of that politically correct bullshit of BCE and CE is offensive and insulting. The whole damn world knows that it is all about Christ. If it were Buddha, Zoroaster, or Luther, that very reference should be used and not cowardly covered up.
